HoR President to attend Arab-South America Summit in Riyadh

By Libya Herald reporter.

Tobruk, 9 November 2015:

The visit to Saudi Arabia by the president of the House of Representatives, Ageela Salah . . .[restrict]Gwaidar who left Libya only today, may last longer than initially expected.

In addition to talks with Saudi officials, he is to take part in the Fourth Summit of Arab-South American Countries being held in the Riyadh on Tuesday and Wednesday. The general aim of the summits, first held in 2005, is to ensure greater coordination between politicians and organisations in the Middle East, North Africa and South America. This year’s summit is expected to concentrate of trade although, according to an Arab League official, a number of number of Arab regional issues will also be discussed, including Libya.

According to a spokesman for Salah Gwaider’s office, the HoR president would address “many of the political, economic and military topics of interest to Libya and the countries of this summit”.

Political and even more so trade links between Libya and South America are not, however, a major issue at present for the House of Representatives or its president, and it has been alleged that his attendance at the summit and the visit to Saudi Arabia as a whole are a manoeuvre to prevent a meeting of the House of Representatives over the Libya Dialogue and planned Government of National Accord (GNA) from taking place.

Salah Gwaider and many other members from the east of the country oppose a GNA as presently proposed.

He was accused last week by outgoing UN Special Envoy Bernardino Leon of deliberately preventing the HoR from voting on the GNA which a majority of members are thought to approve.

Those opposed to it, however, deny this.

It is now being suggested that the next meeting of the HoR will not happen for at least another week. [/restrict]
