Tripoli, 29 November 2015:

The leaking of bugged mobile phone calls is the latest twist in the drama between Rada, the . . .[restrict]Tripoli “deterrence” force and Grand Mufti Sadeq Ghariani, who has accused them of being “bandits”.

The two calls, posted on social media by a senior official of the Khalifa Ghwel administration in the capital, both involved the head of the religious endowments (awqaf) ministry’s Tripoli office, Mohamed Atkitek.  He was arrested last week and held for three days by Rada, which is run by Abdul Raouf Kara.

No date has been given for either call, though they were clearly made before his detention. In the first, Atkitek is said to speaking to Abdulbaset Ghiwla, who is close to Ghariani.  In the second Atkitek is apparently talking to his deputy at the ministry,  Tarek Al-Daghel.

Ghiwla is heard complaining that the ministry was losing control of some mosques, though he did not say to whom. He urges Atkitek to be more efficient and replace incompetent personnel.

Ghiwla also asks Atkitek if he knows if his deputy has received a new threat from Rada. Atkitek replies that he has no idea but will contact Daghel and find out.

The second call appears to lead on directly from the first. Atkitek asks his deputy if he has been threatened and Daghel says he has. He mentions the name of someone belonging to Rada and uses some choice expressions to describe this individual.

After his release from custody yesterday, Atkitek told the Ghariani’s TV channel Tanasah that the men who arrested him had told him that they were Salafists who rejected IS.
