Benghazi, 21 November 2015:

The seemingly interminable battling by the army to clear Benghazi of IS and Ansar Al-Sharia . . .[restrict]forces continued today with yet more heavy fighting in the Lethi district and a renewed battle to push the terrorists out of Hawari hospital.

An eye-witness has told that the Libya Herald that this afternoon at least six airstrikes were launched against terrorist positions in Leithi while IS forces retaliated with Grad missiles and mortars.

The Commander-in-chief of the armed forces Khalifa Hafter has promised repeatedly this year that Benghazi would be clear of terrorists “ within a month“. Yet the battle for Hawari hospital has continued for weeks, with government forces, principally the 204 Tank Brigade, still unable to advance beyond the residential compound it seized.

Equally, in July the army assaulted Nubs Square in Leithi which it said at the time, it regarded as a key terrorist position. The advance was reportedly held up by booby-traps which claimed the lives of several soldiers. Yet six months on, Nubs Square remains contested. Despite airstrikes, tanks attacks and bombardment, the army has been unable to clear the district.  At least one soldier was reported to have been killed in today’s fighting. [/restrict]
