Tunis, 26 January 2016:

The EU is reported to be mulling travel bans and asset freezes on GNC president Nuri Abu Sahmain and GNC-appointed prime minister Khalifa Ghwell.

Sources have told Reuters in Brussels that the sanctions could be in place within three weeks if both men continue to block attempts to form the Government of National Accord.

“We want the political process to go forward but we are also ready to penalise those who want to obstruct it,” the agency quoted one person close to talks.

The threat of sanctions against Libyan leaders is not entirely new. Last July, Libyan Dawn notables Abdurrahman Sewehli, and militia leader Salah Badi, both from Misrata  and House of Representatives boycotter Abdul-Raouf Al-Manaie, were all threatned by EU  sanctions. Also threatened were armed forces commander-in-chief General Khalifa Hafter and Air Force commander Saqr Geroushi .

This came the month after Russia and China had blocked sanctions on Swehli and Othman Milaiqtah, commander of the Zintan-allied  QaaQaa Brigade. [/restrict]
