Tunis, 27 January 2016:

Sabratha Municipality Council announced on Monday that it is has started issuing ID cards for all foreign labourers within its boundaries as part of a policy to carry out a census and control of the number of foreign labourers within its jurisdiction.

The Resources and Construction Committee member Abdelbaset Elghrably said that the computerized data system will hold information on workers, their place of living, their field of work and contact details.

The system will also hold details of foreign workers’ Libyan guarantor who is contracted with them as well as details of the foreign workers’ visas and health certificates.

Elghrably called on all foreign labourers to complete their registration procedures urgently and he also urged all Libyans to register their foreign labourers as soon as possible.

He referred to the previously announced 4th February 2016 deadline for the registration of foreign labourers within the Municipality.

Elghrably made it clear that the Municipality will legally pursue all those who transgress by failing to register.

It will be recalled that Sabratha has been accused on numerous occasions of harbouring IS within its boundaries to the extent that some areas were labelled under IS control.

A Tunisian arrested by Tripoli’s Rada (Special Deterrence Force) in a video confession broadcast earlier this month claimed that his armed Tunisian IS/Daesh colleagues were driving in their cars freely in the city of Sabratha. They had carried out kidnappings in order to finance operations in Tunisia, he had claimed.

The Municipality has, however, consistently denied the accusations to the extent that it has put out an open invitation to the world media to visit and inspect its city. [/restrict]
