Benghazi, 11 January 2016:

The member of the House of Representatives (HoR) for Guba, Mona Al-Ghaith, was killed yesterday in . . .[restrict]a car crash while travelling back to Tobruk from Guba a yesterday.

Her nephew with whom she was travelling also died in the smash which happened on the Ajdabiya-Tobruk desert road. With the so-called Islamic State still active around Derna, it is considered too dangerous to drive the more direct coastal route.

Condolences to the family have been sent from the new Presidency Council, led by prime minister-designate Faiez Serraj as well as from the HoR president Ageela Salah and prime minister Abdullah Al-Thinni.

Salah said that Ghaith, a notably active member of the HoR, had worked hard on many issues, notably the displaced and the treatment of wounded revolutionaries. He also commended her commitment to the poor and her willingness to go to government departments and deal face-to-face with bureaucrats on behalf of constituents. [/restrict]
