Tripoli, 27 June 2016:

The President of the House of Representatives, Ageela Saleh, arrived last night in Muscat at the invitation of the Omani government.

The visit is said to be connected to Oman’s desire to mediate a solution to the Libyan crisis.

Last March, the Sultanate, which has long had close links to the Ibadi community in the Jebel Nafusa and was the first country to call for a no-fly resolution at the beginning of the 2011 revolution, invited members of the Constitution Drafting Assembly to go there and resolve the various issues that were causing divisions and blocking progress. However, many did not turn up and ultimately the efforts did not succeed.

Saudi Arabia is also said to be planning a more comprehensive mediation, with reports that it plans to invite tribal and other leaders to the kingdom after Eid. As part of its move, there are also unconfirmed reports that a delegation of Saudi religious scholars plan to visit Sadik Al-Ghariani in Tripoli to encourage him to change his political stance.

The controversial cleric has been calling regularly for revolutionaries to attack the Libyan National Army in the east.

After Oman, Ageela Saleh, who is accompanied by a number of mayors and tribal leaders from eastern Libya, is reportedly planning to go to Qatar, although this has been denied in some quarters.

Both visits are said to be linked to the Saudi moves, with Gulf Cooperation Council members being brought in to use their best offices with the various players in the Libyan crisis.
