Tunis,  27 June 2016:

The Italian government is sending seven tons of drugs and hospital supplies to Misrata while a military transporter has evacuated 11 seriously injured fighters for treatment in Rome.

The €50,000 shipment of medicines and equipment is part of what the Italian foreign ministry described as its major humanitarian effort in Italy. Rome has already provided $2.4 million in multilateral aid via the United Nations and the International Red Cross.

The evacuation of the eleven fighters for emergency care in Rome on Sunday was by a C130 transporter. The wounded men were taken from the Ciampino military airport to the Celio military hospital and other medical centres in the capital.

There were reports that the “Italian ambassador” had also travelled on the flight from Misrata to Rome. However, the Italian government  has still not appointed a new ambassador for Libya to replace the widely-respected Giuseppe Buccino Grimaldi who left the post over a year ago.

After Italian foreign minister Paolo Gentloni flew to Tripoli in April to see prime minister-designate Faiez Serraj, Italy delivered three shipments of health kits worth €150,000.  Containing drugs and medical consumables sufficient to treat ten thousand patients for three months, they were distributed to Tripoli, Benghazi and Ghat.
