Electricity production at the Gulf Power Station, 20 kilometres west of Sirte, has recommenced after a year-long break, according to the Libyan news agency LANA.
The power station was captured in June 2016 by fighters from the so-called Islamic State, and finally retaken by Bunyan Marsous forces six weeks ago.
Only one 175-MW unit in one of the power station’s four 350-MW generators is operational. All the rest still have to be fully installed and commissioned. The US-designed and South Korean-built 1400-MW station should have come in stream in 2014 but was delayed first by the revolution then by the growth of IS.
With the unit back on steam, power outages in the west of the country should be reduced.
There are no plans at present, however, to restart work on the other production units.
