Despite lengthy interrupted studies and the destruction of their campus, 74 Benghazi University students graduated today in a hope-filled ceremony that showed a positive side to the city even though fighting against militants still continues.
The graduates were all IT students.
Benghazi University undergraduates are again studying but with the campus needing to be massively rebuilt, classes are taking place in secondary schools across the city, usually in the afternoon.
Meanwhile, in another sign of normality returning to the city, the police have been destroying illegally constructed buildings, either knocking them down or setting them on fire.
The campaign started in Marj last week and moved to Benghazi yesterday. Much of it at present is in the central district of Al-Majouri with the focus on buildings, such as cigarette stalls, built on public land.
There has, however, been some resistance to the move, with clashes reported as a result. No injuries have been reported. There are no details as yet about arrests.
In the aftermath of the revolution, Benghazi, like Tripoli, saw a wave of illegal construction – on state-owned land, on stolen property and of historic buildings demolished without permission and others erected on the site.
