Tripoli, 30 September 2016:
The pro-Islamist Al-Nabaa TV station has been condemned by the Libyan Independent Journalists Syndicate for promoting hate speech.
In a statement, the syndicate said that on the station’s programme Benghazi Today an invited speaker had been able to vilify and defame local journalist Hanan Almagoub without the presenter making any attempt to put a stop to proceedings. On the contrary, it added, the station had put Almagoub’s life at risk by displaying her picture and name.
Journalists and others in the media had a duty to promote human rights and peace and to discourage any incitement to violence and conflict, the syndicate said. It pledged to document all instances in the Libyan media of hate speech, incitement to murder, violence or attack, or any other expression all that was a violation of professional standards.
