Turkey and Libya have agreed to look into the possibility of Turkish involvement in building and training a united, professional Libyan army. The two side also agreed as a first step to send a group of Libyan pilots to Turkey for training on Turkish-made helicopters and drones.
The move, announced by the Presidency Council followed yesterday’s visit by Presidency Council head Faiez Serraj to a factory that produces equipment for the Turkish Air Force, including helicopters.
It has also emerged that in his talks with Serraj, Turkey’s Prime Minister Binali Yildirum said he would press Turkish Airlines to restore flights to Libya. Turkey would also look into easing visa restrictions on Libyan citizens.
The Turkish carrier suspended its operations to Libya in January 2015, becoming the last foreign airline to do so as clashes worsened in the country. Previously, Turkish Airlines flew to Tripoli, Benghazi, Misrata and Sebha.
On Wednesday it was announced a joint committee was to be formed between the countries to expedite the return of Turkish companies to Libya so they can resume working on stalled projects.
