Tripoli and Benghazi, 18 February 2017:

The Kufra House of Representatives member Jibril Awhaidah, kidnapped outside his home in Tobruk three weeks ago, has been released, apparently unharmed.

Social media images today show Awhaidah looking relatively relaxed and making phone calls. The identity of his kidnappers has not been given.

It was suggested he was seized because of  the alleged involvement of his son in the disappearance of a member of the Obeidat tribe five years ago in Kufra – an allegation that apparently only came to light last year.

Mansur Ebsis, an elder from Al-Menafa tribe in Tobruk told Alwasat that the family involved had seized Awhaidah to force his son to surrender to the authorities and be investigated.

“Some elders have intervened” explained Ebsis “and managed to convince Awhaidah’s son to submit himself to authorities and he did so.”
