University union calls for strike over bonus payments

The Libyan universities’ teaching staff union has announced that members will go on indefinite strike from 23 May. They are demanding overtime and bonus payments, which they claim were struck out of their last salaries. As well as the back pay, they want guarantees that this will not happen again.
In a statement, they claim that they had sent a complaint about the matter to the ministries of higher education and finance but these had been ignored.
The strike will occur not only in universities but in other institutions of higher learning.
So far there has been no response from the education ministry. However, officials at Tripoli university have confirmed the strike plans but have expressed hopes that there will be a negotiated settlement before 23 May.
Officials in Benghazi,where medicl students are due to take exams on 23 May, insist there will be no strike.
