Tripoli 5 May 2017:

On Sunday, Abu Sleem Municipal Council is to open a distribution point for the sale of essential food items for needy residents.

In statement posted via its Facebook page, the municipality said that some national companies and local factories had provided a variety of foodstuffs and juices. These point of sales were intended to give fair prices because they were government supported.

“The cooperated companies at are Al-Jaid Company for Food Importation and Asil Compny for Food Industries,” it said.

The statement insisted the council had no vested or financial interested and only sought to aid local residents.

With the steep decline in the value of dinar on the black market and food traders having to rely on the market to access foreign currency to pay for imports, there has been inevitable rise in the cost of living which has not been matched by any rise in salaries or pensions. As a result of inflation, many Libyans are now finding themselves below the poverty line, unable to pay for food.

The Council has asked local residents to submit their National ID numbers and family status to register them in the system so food can be obtained at the distribution points.
