Tripoli, 16 June 2017:

Tawerghan civil society leaders have announced that they intend call on fellow residents of the town on 27 Ramadan (22 June) to return to the town. In a statement dated two days ago but only published yesterday they said that they themselves would go to the ghost town and make the appeal from there.

The announcement follows yet another failed target date for a return.

There had been plans for a return to start yesterday, 22 Ramadan (15 June). However this had to be postponed because of the timing was too short, according to the union of Tawerghan civil society organisations which has initiated this latest homecoming attempt.

It has been supported by the Elders Council of Misrata under the slogan “Whoever enters Tawergha is safe”. Misrata municipal council and others in the city are said to support the move.

The Tawerghan union has demanded that the Presidency Council, the House of Representatives, the State Council and government bodies give practical assistance to the initiative.

They have also called on Libyan and international NGOs, plus the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), to provide logistical support.
