A fire in a Marada palm grove today briefly threatened production from the Raguba oil field.
The blaze, which was blamed on high temperatures of more than 45C, combined with strong winds, broke out after a smaller fire had extinguished last night.
Fire fighters from the Sirte Oil Company which operates the 80-well Raguba field were able to bring the blaze under control.
According to Sirte Oil, trained firemen were joined by ordinary company personnel in the effort to put out the fire.
The extent of the destruction to the palm groves in unclear but one local source said that they had been seriously damaged,
