London, 23 January 2019:

In its two sessions held on Monday and Tuesday, Libya’s internationally-recognized parliament, the House of Representatives (HoR), debated some potentially key pieces of legislation.

Firstly, at the request of the High National Election Commission (HNEC), the contested referendum law was amended.

Secondly, the draft law on supervising funds raised from the new levy imposed by the Tripoli Central Bank of Libya on the sale of foreign exchange was forwarded by the HoR to the National Planning Council to study and return its feedback within two weeks.

Thirdly, the HoR also started discussing the presidential election law.

The HoR holds the view that it has the legal power to call for a presidential election, which its head Ageela Saleh has threatened to call if UNSMIL and Tripoli do not call for elections.
