HoR forms committee to participate in National Conference

London, 1 April 2019:
During its session held in Tobruk today, the House of Representatives (HoR) formed a committee to represent it in the National Conference (@multaqa.libya), the HoR spokesperson Abdalla Belheeg reported today.
The news will be very much welcomed by the international community in general and UNSMIL head Ghassan Salame specifically. There were fears that one of the main political players could boycott the event – and there is still plenty of time for that to happen – which could have undermined its legitimacy and its outcomes.
Ghassan Salame’s unspecific accusations in a media interview last week that Libya’s political elite were corrupt threatened to wreck the National Conference after he was criticised by 37 HoR members, the High State Council and a member of the Presidency Council.
It will be recalled that at press conference held on 20 March in Tripoli, UNSMIL head Ghassan Salamé had announced that his planned and long-awaited National Conference will be held from 14 to 16 April at the ‘‘neutral’’ Libyan city of Ghadames.
It will also be recalled that the National Conference was part of Ghassan Salame’s multi-pronged 2017 Libya Action Plan. It was intended to pressurise the HoR and HSC to break the political impasse, precipitate elections and take Libya out of its current transitional state. dlocked0 Hasht
