London, 17 November 2020:

Faiez Serraj, Prime Minister of the internationally recognized Libyan government based in Tripoli, yesterday pledged to allocate funds to the country’s High National Election Commission (HNEC).

The undertaking by Serraj comes on the back of an announcement by the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) meeting in Tunis (9-17 November) to hold constitutionally based Libyan elections on 24 December 2021.

Serraj also pledged to harness all available resources to enable HNEC to perform its work efficiently and professionally. He underscored the importance of adhering to the announced election date of and declared his full support for this approach that strengthens the demands of citizens and forms the basis of his initiatives that he had previously proposed to get Libya out of the current crisis.

Serraj hoped that everyone puts the nation’s interest above personal interests, and that the spirit of understanding and brotherhood will prevail throughout Libya, so that the desired democratic civil state is achieved.

It will be recalled that Faiez Serraj had in his 23 August speech called for Libya-wide General Elections in March 2021 as part of his reaction to public unrest manifested in the August protests across Libya.

In response, HNEC head Emad Al-Sayeh complained in media comments on 3 September that his organization was not ready to hold elections due to the lack of funds provided by the Serraj government.
