By Sami Zaptia.

London, 24 November 2020:

UNSMIL said today that it was encouraged by the large consultative session of Libya’s House of Representatives (HoR) that will begin today in Tangiers and is being hosted by Morocco.

It said ‘‘that such a diverse range of Parliamentarians from Libya’s three regions is meeting under one roof is a positive and welcome step’’.

UNSMIL said that it has always supported the unity of the HoR and hoped the HoR will fulfil the Libyan people’s expectations for implementation of the roadmap agreed upon by the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) towards the holding of national elections on December 24, 2021.

The 75-member LPDF held its first face-to-face meeting in Tunis from 9-15 November and resumed virtually yesterday. It has adjourned until tomorrow.

Reports from Moroccan media say up to 120 HoR members gathered in Tangiers for an unofficial consultative meeting from 23-25 November.

The meeting, that is not brokered by UNSMIL, gathers members from across the main political divide and from the three main regions of Libya.

The main aim of the meeting is to organize a meeting with a quorum within Libyan territory in an attempt to complete the HoR’s main function at its establishment, which was to approve the draft constitution for elections that would take Libya out of the interim phase and produce a fully mandated government.
