Libya’s Information and communications technology (ICT) Strategy Forum was launched in Tripoli yesterday by its organizer, the state telecoms holding company, the Libyan Post, Telecommunications & IT Holding Company (LPITC).
The two-day event was presided over by LPTIC Chairman, Faisel Gergab, and attended by the Chairmen and General Managers of LPITC subsidiary companies including: Almadar Aljadeed, Libyana, LITC, LTT, Aljeel Aljadeed, and Hatif Libya.
The forum was attended by senior executives from leading ICT companies including Ericsson, Huawei, Nokia, ZTE and Retelit. The Forum aims to develop and raise the capacity of the ICT sector of Libya. It also provides an excellent opportunity for knowledge transfer and capacity building of Libya’s ICT sector and to be in line with latest technological developments and create an attractive environment for foreign investment, LPTIC reported.
It reported that participating companies presented their latest technologies especially on 5G. The new high-speed internet allows for example to download a 3 GB movie in just 35 seconds as opposed to hours at present time. 5G allows for low latency which paves the way to applications for remote surgery and self-driving vehicles. The new technology also allows millions of devices to be connected on the same network within a small geographical area.
The forum addressed several initiatives to develop infrastructure, telecommunications services, improve internet speed, digital transformation, e-government services, and training and professional development of ICT over the next three years. The attending senior managers of international companies affirmed their full commitment to work with LPITC and its subsidiaries to implement projects that would achieve the strategy for developing the ICT sector in Libya.
ICT Academy
LPTIC said that it has undertaken the initiative to create an ICT academy to build upon the positive steps taken in Libya towards stability and considering the demand for raising the performance of private and public services. The ICT academy aims to provide scientific and technical services with a quality that keeps pace with scientific and technical developments in the world.
LPTIC Chairman Gergab said, “this forum constitutes an important step in the return of international companies to work in all cities of Libya. It is a step towards the stimulation of the national economy, creation of job opportunities with possible partnerships with the private sector. He praised teamwork of the sector which helped maintain telecommunications services during dire times.
On their part, LPTIC reported that the visiting telecommunication companies affirmed their commitment to LPTIC and its subsidiary companies to support in the implementation of strategy of the ICT sector of Libya.
