London, 31 January 2021:

The U.S. Embassy congratulated the UN-facilitated Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) and all Libyans on the transparent nomination process for candidates to serve in the new and unified interim government, which will guide Libya toward elections on December 24, 2021.

The embassy’s statement today came in reaction to yesterday’s publication by UNSMIL of the candidates for the four main executive positions; the three Presidency Council members and the prime minister.

The U.S. embassy said it strongly supported the LPDF delegates as they gather on February 1-5 in Geneva to vote on these candidates.

“Military posturing, collusion with foreign forces and mercenaries to undermine the political process, threats to shut down Libya’s energy sector, and attempts to divert Libya’s wealth for partisan agendas are incompatible with the demands of the Libyan people for change,” said Ambassador Norland.
