London, 12 March 2021:

Following its earlier statement today that it was transferring its Monday session from Benghazi to Tobruk, the House of Representatives has been forced to issue another statement refuting that the transfer was due to security reasons.

The Monday Benghazi HoR session was supposed to be dedicated to the Government of National Unity (GNU) taking its oath of office.

In today’s statement, HoR Official Spokesperson, Abdulla Belheeg assured that the transfer of the parliamentary session to Tobruk had nothing to do with the security aspect.

The city of Benghazi is safe and the transfer was done for organizational and logistical reasons, he insisted.

He pointed out that the HoR may hold its sessions either in its constitutional headquarters in Benghazi or its temporary headquarters in Tobruk.

He insisted that there is no truth to the rumours of an armed group attack on its headquarters or office.

There have been increased reports of insecurity and disorder in Benghazi. Critics say segments of the Khalifa Hafter-led Libyan National Army are unravelling and Hafter is either losing control over it – or deliberately allowing increased insecurity to prove his effectiveness.
