London, 26 March 2021:

Abd Alhamid Aldabaiba, prime minister of Libya’s new Government of National Unity (GNU), welcomed yesterday at the headquarters of his Cabinet Office in Tripoli, a high-level European delegation including French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas, and Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio.

During this meeting, the delegation expressed its congratulations to the Libyan people and the Government of National Unity to begin the completion of the Road map adopted by the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF), which ended Libya’s institutional division and led to the formation of its single executive.

The GNU reported that the delegation informed Aldabaiba that their countries were keen to establish stability in Libya because of its importance to the stability of neighbouring countries and the Mediterranean basin, and that their visits constituted a unified European message to support the efforts of the Government of National Unity.

The delegation stressed the determination of their countries to provide various means of support and to the GNU to meet all its obligations on many priority issues in its work.

For his part, Aldabaiba expressed his thanks and gratitude for the position of Germany, France, Italy and all European partners for their support for the road map and their keenness to reconcile the Libyan parties.

He expressed the readiness of the GNU to strengthen the ties of friendship and cooperation with all countries, which strengthens Libya’s role in establishing the pillars of security and stability in the region and the world.

The GNU reported that the meeting touched on several issues, including the establishment of rules for joint cooperation and the return of European companies to complete their stalled projects in Libya, as well as the return of airlines to and from Libya, in addition to strengthening their diplomatic presence from inside Tripoli and addressing the phenomenon of illegal immigration as solidarity responsibility between the two shores of the Mediterranean.

Views were also exchanged on various other issues of common interest and the preparation for the 24 December elections.
