London, 8 October 2021:

The Libyan International Telecoms Company (LITC), a subsidiary of Libya’s state telecoms holding company, the Libyan Post Telecommunications, and Information Technology Company (LPTIC), announced yesterday the completion of the Silphium submarine cable project linking Libya with Greece. The Silphium submarine cable is wholly owned by the Libyan state.

The LITC said the project comes within the strategic plan of the LPTIC company that paves the way for a comprehensive digital transformation of the country.

The capacity of the Silphium project is 70 gigabytes. Completion of the project will increase the total internet capacity to 370 gigabytes, and thus will provide high internet capacities in the eastern region, LITC added.

Libya’s strategic regional role and its digital transformation

Commenting on the occasion, LPTIC chairman Faisal Gergab said “The completion of this project is a great success for the telecommunications sector and the strengthening of Libya’s strategic role regionally, and an essential supporter of the country’s digital transformation plan that LPTIC seeks to achieve in the coming period.’’

On his part, Adel Abu Fares, Chairman of LITC said “We are very happy with this project, which is a national project par excellence. The Silphium submarine cable, which is wholly owned by the Libyan state, will greatly contribute to serving the telecommunications sector and will support the plan for digital transformation in the country. It is also an international project that confirms the importance of the strategic geographical location of our country and the link between the continents of the world.”

LITC said it has worked on developing the infrastructure of Libyan international communications and building it with the best standards, by working to exploit Libya’s strategic location, expand regionally and gradually increase the proportion of its contribution to the cables linking Libya to the world, where the proportion of its contribution to the submarine cable linking Libya with Europe and India to 7 % and 50 % for the cable linking Libya with Italy, and the contribution rate reached 100 % in the Silphium submarine cable, which is wholly owned by the Libyan state.
