Tripoli, 14 November 2021:

Libya’s High National Elections Commission (HNEC) announced today that Saif al-Islam Muammar al-Qaddafi, son of ousted former dictator Muamar Qaddafi, has registered on a preliminary basis to run as a candidate in the country’s presidential elections.

He registered in the southern city of Sebha where his Qaddadfa tribe have a strong base. The first round of the presidential elections are planned to start on 24 December 2021.

Earlier in the day the Sebha HNEC office had posted photos and video of Saif signing his candidacy forms. However, they were later removed.

The video clip showed that Saif had also received his voting card which will enable him to vote in both the presidential and parliamentary elections.

There is nothing in Libyan law that prevents Saif from standing for elections.

It will be recalled, however, that the International Criminal Court still has an extradition request for Saif for charges of war crimes.
