The General Authority for Monitoring Media Content (GAMMC) organized in Tripoli on Thursday a discussion session entitled “The Negative Role of Social Media – Libya as a Model”. The event was attended by a group of academics, media professionals, specialists and researchers in the field of combating hate speech and information disorder, civil society activists and content makers.

Opening the event, the head of the GAMMC, Jalal Othman, stressed the role of the commission in combating hate speech, and false and misleading news, in accordance with international principles of freedom of the press. He reiterated his call to all media outlets to cooperate in order to provide professional and committed media content, seeking credibility and transparency, and promoting freedom of opinion and expression.

Five presentations on social media in Libya and their role and effect were made before a discussion session was held as well as the collection of recommendations.

It must be noted that the GAMMC is a government organisation.
