The United States Embassy in Tripoli is seeking an individual for the full time (40 hours/week) position of POLITICAL SPECIALIST

BASIC FUNCTION OF THE POSITION:

Reporting directly to the Political Economic Section Chief, the incumbent provides expert advice on and highly-developed analysis of political, economic, and social developments in Libya. The Political Specialist develops and maintains high-level contacts and subject matter experts across a broad range of relevant fields with whom to confer on and confirm reports. Conducts field trips in support of research. Prepares reporting cables and briefing materials. Liaises with colleagues in other embassy sections to advance mission goals. Undertakes translating and interpreting as directed.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • Master’s degree in political science, international relations, history is required.
  • Five years of progressively responsible experience in the social sciences, preferable in the field of Libyan political analysis, newspaper reporting or political matters, university teaching is required.
  • Level IV (Fluent) of reading, writing and speaking English and Arabic is required.
  • A thorough knowledge of Libyan political, economic and social structure, institutions, political parties, historical development and keep political figures is required.
  • Ability to develop and maintain an extensive range of high level and working level contacts within the Libyan government officials, political parties and civil society.

The United States Embassy in Tripoli is seeking an individual for the full time (40 hours/week) position of MEDIA and PRESS ASSISTANT

 

BASIC FUNCTION OF THE POSITION:

The Press and Media Specialist works independently as the section’s and Embassy’s primary liaison and conduit to and from local and regional media and news outlets. He or she monitors local and regional news and press, and prepares translations and summaries for the PAO and the daily press summary report. The Specialist also maintains close contacts with government officials, journalists, TV stations, and other figures in news and media and engages media outlets to publish press releases and materials, manages interview requests for Embassy officials, and organizes press coverage for Embassy events and U.S. policies.   He/she helps design media campaigns for exchange programs, Embassy events, job postings, and other occasions as required.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • Bachelor degree in a journalism, media, literature,or related field
  • Three to five years of progressively responsible experience in a journalism, public relations, media analysis, communications advising, or related field
  • Level IV (Fluent) in written and spoken English is required. Level IV (Fluent) in written and spoken Arabic is required.
  • Incumbent must have an extensive knowledge of, and contacts in, Libya’s media and press environment, and of the political, educational and economic domains.
  • Incumbent must have experience in interacting with journalists and media, preparing press strategies and packages, and handling press events.
