Passenger and goods shipping line between Tunisian ports and Misrata are being considered

London, 24 April 2021:

Tunisia is considering opening a passenger and vehicle shipping line between the port of Misrata and the ports of Sfax and La Goulette, Minister of Transport and Logistics Moez Chakchouk was quoted as saying yesterday by his Ministry.

The revelation came after the Minister’s meeting Thursday with Executive Chairman of the Tunisian-Libyan Cooperation Council Saber Bouguerra. The initial plan is for the shipping line to connect Misrata to the ports of Goulette and Zarzis, with the port of Sfax following afterwards.

These new proposed shipping lines would follow on from the existing lines transporting mainly Tunisian agricultural goods from Tunisia to Libya.

The announcement is also linked to the fact that the Misrata Maritime Terminal is now ready to go into operation having announced that it is to launch its first cruise trip to Istanbul after the end of Ramadan (mid-May).

Trade between Tunisia and Libya increased by 148.1% in March 2021, compared to February 2021, according to statistics from the INS quoted by TAP news agency.

It said bilateral trade accounted for almost 7% of Tunisia’s total foreign trade in 2010, while the number of Tunisian companies investing in Libya was about 1,000 companies employing about 150,000 workers.
